Why Election Day in the United States is held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November?

Election Day in the United States is held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November for several historical and practical reasons: 1. Agricultural Society: In the 19th century, the U.S. was largely agrarian. November was chosen because it followed the harvest season, allowing farmers to participate in elections without disrupting their agricultural work. 2. Travel Considerations: Many voters needed to travel significant distances to reach polling places. Holding elections on a Tuesday after a Monday provided a full day for travel after the weekend, minimizing the risk of people arriving late. 3. Religious Observance: Sunday was typically a day of worship, and many people would not be available to vote then. By choosing Tuesday, it allowed voters to attend church and then travel to their polling locations. 4. Market Days: Wednesday was often a market day in many towns, so having elections on a Tuesday avoided conflicts with this important activity. This scheduling has ...

What were the saddest last words in history?

Image
Few people know that the German doing the Nazi salute on the podium behind black American athlete Jesse Owens,  Lutz Long , would become close friends with Owens. Long lived in Nazi Germany, where everyone was told each day of the supposed superiority of the Aryan race. But he, himself, didn’t feel that way at all. Since the 1936 Olympics, until the days of WWII, Long and Owens exchanged letters. Even when Long was sent off to war, fighting in North Africa and Sicily, the two men still wrote to each other, checking in one one another, as they wrote of their wives, their families, hopes, fears and loves. In North Africa in 1943, in the desert, Lutz Long wrote his final letter to Jesse Owens. A man he called his brother. His last ever known words, and they are haunting: I am here, Jesse, where it seems there is only the dry sand and the wet blood. I do not fear so much for myself, my friend Jesse, I fear for my woman who is home, and my young son Karl, who has never really kno...

Why is teacher's Day not celebrated in Japan?

Image
In JAPAN, there is  NO TEACHER'S DAY... Once I asked my Japanese colleague, Teacher Yamamoto: -  When do you celebrate Teachers' Day in Japan, and how do you observe it? Surprised by my question, he replied: -  We don't have any Teachers ' Day celebration. Hearing his response, I didn't know whether to believe him or not. I wondered, 'Why does a country with a developed economy, science, and technology show such a lack of respect for teachers and their work?' One day after work,  Yamamoto invited me to his home. Since he lived far from the school, we took the subway. The subway cars were crowded during the evening rush hour. I managed to squeeze in and stood, holding onto the handrails tightly. Suddenly, an elderly man sitting next to me offered his seat. Not understanding such respectful behavior from the older man, I couldn't accept his offer, but he insisted, and I had to sit. After leaving the subway, I asked Yamamoto to explain the elder's act...

If China is full of the smartest people, why is the US so much more advanced?

Image
I suggest you visit China. It reversed my preconception. I am from Norway, North Europe. A rather modern and advanced society. On my first visit to the US over 20 years ago, I was surprised at how backward and old fashioned it was. Movies had let me to believe it was the epitome of modern society. I visited several states on the East/South-East. Very backwards digitally. Terrible infrastructure. Unwalkable. Dirty. Hard to find quality restaurants outside of big cities. Dead city centres in medium sized cities. I went to China a year or two later, and the opposite struck me. It was a highly modern society. Highly digital. Fantastic high-speed infrastructure (that is even better nowadays). Super clean, modern cities. I was mainly in the Jiangsu province that time. Loved it! I suggest everyone to go and form their own opinions. I really fell in love with Suzhou, not far from Shanghai. Modern Suzhou: Old Suzhou: I should point out, I do like many things in the US too. I’ve since been...
